Both of these men presented the\nsuspension trick in precisely the same manner claimed by\nRobert-Houdin as his original invention of 1847. Neither\nAnderson nor Herrmann claimed the honor of having\ninvented the trick, and it is more than likely that the\nmechanician who made their apparatus for the suspension\ntrick made the one used by Robert-Houdin also. Herr-\nmann, like Robert-Houdin, called the trick ethereal sus-\npension. Anderson gave it the title of \"Chloriforcene\nSuspension,\" as the reproduction of an Anderson litho-\ngraph on page 234 will prove.\nDuring precisely the same period of time a brilliantly\nsuccessful German conjurer, Alexander, was presenting\nthe same trick in America, where he remained as a pro-\nfessional entertainer for ten years. In my collection,\ntogether with corroborative handbills and programmes,\nthere will be found this statement from Alexander:\n\"The suspension was at first produced by me in 1845\nor 1846, after reading in an Oriental annual, edited by\nseveral officers of the Indian Army, the trick of a fakir\nwho made a companion sit in the air by using a bamboo\nstick. My trick had no success, because the sitting was\ntoo near the ground. I then made him stand in the air,\nand the effect was marvellous.\"\nMy meeting with Alexander, of which this correspond-\nence was the result, marked an era in my search for\nmaterial for this volume.
